Signals in MT4, MT5, cTrader and the broker's own app

The same signal feels different depending on where it lands. Here's where each broker puts them and how to switch a plug-in on.

Three places a signal can live

Broker signals reach you in one of three ways: a panel inside the broker's own app, a plug-in inside MetaTrader, or a web tool in your client area. Which one you get depends on the broker, and it decides how fast you can go from reading a signal to placing an order.

  • In-app panel. The signal sits on the chart or in a signals tab. Libertex shows Trading Central signals on many asset charts, and AvaTrade has a Trading Signals tab in WebTrader and the AvaTradeGo app.
  • MetaTrader plug-in, indicator or Expert Advisor. You install something, restart, and the content appears among your MT4 or MT5 tools. AvaTrade's Alpha Generation plug-in, IC Markets' Trading Central indicators and Admirals' Supreme Edition work this way.
  • Client-area web tool. You log into the broker's portal and open a signals page. Pepperstone points clients to Trading Tools in the secure client area for Autochartist.

"Not documented" means we didn't find it on the pages we read, not that it doesn't exist. Confirm with the broker.

Setting up a MetaTrader plug-in

The exact files and menus differ by broker, so follow your broker's own guide. The general pattern is the same:

  1. Download from the broker, not a forum. Use the installer on the broker's tools page. Plug-ins from unknown sources can run code on your computer.
  2. Close MetaTrader and run the installer. Point it at the MetaTrader copy you use for your account.
  3. Restart and log in. Open the Navigator panel and look under Expert Advisors or Indicators for the new entry.
  4. Attach it to a chart. For Admirals' Trading Central tools the broker's own instruction is to drag Admiral-Connect from the Expert Advisors list onto the chart.
  5. Allow what the plug-in needs. Some require algorithmic trading or web requests to be enabled in the options. Only switch on what the broker's guide asks for.

cTrader needs the broker's say-so

cTrader supports Autochartist and Trading Central features, but a cTrader support reply on its community forum made one point clear: these features are enabled only after the broker requests them. So "we offer cTrader" doesn't mean you get signals in it. IC Markets announced Autochartist on cTrader. For any other broker, ask before you assume.

When it doesn't show up

The signal panel is empty

Cause: signals cover a subset of instruments and refresh on a schedule. Libertex's own materials say signals appear on many asset charts, not all. Fix: switch to a major pair, index or commodity and check the signals list, not a single chart.

The plug-in isn't in the Navigator

Cause: it installed into a different MetaTrader copy, or the platform wasn't restarted. Fix: reinstall into the right folder and restart. If you have several terminals, check which one is linked to your account.

You can't see signals on your phone

Cause: some tools are desktop-only. Admirals' Supreme Edition, for example, was announced for the desktop versions of MT4 and MT5. Fix: use the broker's own mobile app if it has a signals feature, as AvaTradeGo does, or treat the mobile platform as order entry only.

Quick answers

Do I need to install an Expert Advisor to get signals in MT5?

Sometimes. AvaTrade and Admirals use a plug-in or add-on for MetaTrader, and IC Markets integrates indicators into the charts. Brokers with their own app, such as Libertex, show signals without any install.

Can I click a signal to place the order?

On Libertex, the Use signal button lets you choose trade amount and multiplier and place the signal. AvaTrade's signals include take-profit and stop-loss that you can adjust. MetaTrader plug-ins vary.
